General Steps for What You'll Want to Do

  1. Pre-Preparation: Document, Document Document.
    1. Write. Blog about what you're learning and experiencing in your UMW blog.
    2. Take lots of pictures. and share them on Flickr. Remember to use THEA435 to tag your photos.
    3. Shoot video. This can be you talking to a camera and reflecting on your experiences. Or you could interview each other. Film activities around the department. Take video on your trips to Florida and Video. Upload them to YouTube. _Remember to use THEA435 to tag your videos._ Embed the best ones on your blog and reflect (see above).
    4. Record audio. Talk to yourself about what you're thinking. Interview each other. Upload what you've recorded to DivShare and embed it in a blog post.
  2. Outline Your Story:
    1. Focus is important. Don't try to tell the story of everything that you learned in this class. Pick a defining moment, experience, or realization.
    2. Need inspiration? Listen to the amazing stories on [This American Life. Or, go back and review your own blog posts, photos, and videos. You may be surprised by what you find.
    3. Create a storyboard of the story you want to tell. Example: http://cogdogroo.wikispaces.com/Dominoe+Storyboard
  3. Gather Your Media: Remember all that work in step 1? This is where it starts to pay off.
    1. Scour your content and the class' content (blog posts, photos, videos) and pick the stuff that you can use as you put your particular story together. It might be worthwhile to burn a CD or all the media you plan to use.
    2. Scour the Web for free and non-copyright restricted resources. A great place to start: http://cogdogroo.wikispaces.com/StoryMedia. REMEMBER: JUST BECAUSE IT'S ON THE WEB DOESN'T MEAN YOU CAN USE IT FOR FREE AND WITHOUT PERMISSION.
  4. Pick your Tool and Produce Your Story.
    1. Check out http://cogdogroo.wikispaces.com/StoryTools for an amazing list of Web-based tools for digital storytelling. Pick a tool that fits with the kind of story you want to tell (timeline, photo slideshow, comic book, map, etc.)
    2. Alternatively, you can use software on your computer or a lab computer to create your digital story: iTunes, Windows Movie Maker, PowerPoint
