NYC RESEARCH QUESTIONS

1. How do you get tickets to a taping of Saturday Night Live?
There are two ways to get tickets. One is to enter the e-mail lottery the August before the season and people will be randomly chosen for random dates and times. Entering the lottery does not guarantee tickets. The other way to get tickets is to show up at the 49th street side of 30 Rockefeller Plaza at 7 am on the morning of the tapings for stand-by tickets. Getting a stand-by ticket does not guarantee entrance to the show.

2. What exhibit is on display at the South Street Seaport and why is it controversial?
Bodies The Exhibition is on display at South Street Seaport. Its quite controversial because the exhibit features real bodies which have been preserved and pulled apart so the insides show. Many human rights activists disagree the exhibit due to there being known proof from the Chinese government that the bodies were donated to medical research before they died. Most bodies have no death certificates and no record of whether it was in fact that person's wish to be donated to medical research.

3. Who is buried in Grant’s Tomb, and how do you get to it via subway?
Ulysses S. Grant and his wife are buried at Grant's Tomb. It is the second largest mausoleum in the Western Hemisphere which was near ruin due to vandals, but was restored in the 1990's. Take the #1 or #9 subway trains to West 116th St. Station at Broadway. Walk six blocks north, and two blocks west.

4. What does Fifth Avenue have to do with helping you get your bearings in New York?
Fifth Avenue is the dividing line for the streets in New York City. It is the zero-numbering point for New York streets, and the numbers increase in both directions as you walk away from 5th Ave. For example, it separates East 59th Street from West 59th Street.

5. How do you get to the deli where you can recreate the famous scene from When Harry Met Sally?

The deli is Katz's Delicatessen. It is located on 205 E. Houston Street on the SW corner of Houston and Ludlow. It is 1.5 blocks East of 2nd Ave Lower East Side Metro Station.

6. What tours does the Lower East Side Tenement Museum offer?

8. How do you get to the Friends building via subway?
The Friends Building, on the corner of Grove and Bedford, is a stone's throw (~0.15 miles) from Queens Plaza; the E, G, R, and V lines all stop there. Additionally, the Seven stops within a mile of the building.

The library houses a tremendous collection of historic recordings, videotapes, autographed manuscripts, correspondence, sheet music, stage designs, press clippings, programs and theatrical posters. If you are interested in the performing arts, this is one place that can't be missed.

11. What’s the Costume Institute at the Met?

The Costume Institute houses a collection of more than 30,000 costumes and accessories spanning five continents and as many centuries. Arguably the preeminent institution of its kind in the world, the matrix of The Costume Institute collection was the Museum of Costume Art, an independent entity formed in 1937. Today, The Costume Institute's 5,000-square-feet galleries, which were refurbished in 1992, house two special exhibitions a year based on The Costume Institute's peerless collection.

12. Where is The Dakota, why is it significant and how do you get to it via subway?

The Dakota is an apartment building located on the Northwest corner of 72nd Street and Central Park West in New York City. The building is best known as the home of former Beatle John Lennon and his wife, Yoko Ono, starting in 1973, and as the location of Lennon's assassination in 1980. To get there: take the B train heading Uptown / to Bedford Pk Blvd. Get off at 72 Street.

13. Where can you go to get a 50-mile panorama view of the city and beyond?

Why, you could go to the Empire State Building! The Observatory's regular hours of operation are: 8:00am to 2:00am 7 days a week. Last elevators go up at 1:15am

14. What’s the American Museum of the Moving Image?

The Museum of the Moving Image advances the public understanding and appreciation of the art, history, technique and technology of film, television, and digital media. 21. What is the Actor’s Studio?
The Actor's Studio, founded in 1947, by Elia Kahn, Cheryl Crawford and Robert Lewis, is a membership organization for professional actors, theatre directors and playwrights. It is known for its work teaching and refining Stanislavski's method acting. The Studio is located in Hell's Kitchen in Manhattan, in the Old Labor Stage at 432 West 44th Street.

23. Where is the Bethesda Fountain and why might you want to visit?


The Bethesda Fountain is located in the "heart" of Central Park (about 72nd St.) The sculpture on the fountain "Angel of Waters", was Emma Stebbins in 1873 and is one of the most recognizable icons in the entire park. Stebbins designed the statue to celebrate the new Croton Aqueduct which not only fed the fountain, but also supplied fresh water to a city that had long been plagued by infectious diseases caused by an unsafe water supply.

Why would you visit The Bethesda Fountain? It is has probably appeared in more movies than any other monument in the park such as Ransom, One Fine Day, Tommy Boy, Bullets over Broadway and Hair. In fact in, the 1973 feature “Godspell”, the fountain becomes a character in its own right, with the newly recruited disciples splashing joyously around in the pool.
