- This tiny East Village mainstay packs in crowds day and night despite the fact that they offer nothing but Belgian fries (or frites.) What makes Belgian fries so great? Not only are they double-fried, but they're typically eaten with a variety of interesting sauces and dips (Pommes Frites has their long list written on a suspended blackboard.) Over 30 to choose from, highlights include Irish Curry, Rosemary Garlic Mayo, Sweet Chili, and Pomegranate Teriyaki. The sauces clock in at $.75 each but the classics (ketchup, yellow mustard, mayo, vinegar, chopped onions) are free. Not surprisingly, the joint is most packed on weekends after the neighborhood bars let out.

- The Food: The five-item vegetarian menu features the house's thick, smooth hummus three ways--and each arrives with fluffy whole wheat or white pita rounds, wide enough to split for sandwich-style stuffing. Tahini-style, the most basic version, pools light and drippy sesame sauce in the center. Warmed masabacha adds texture to its tahini-olive oil mix with whole chickpeas, and hummus foul's fava beans give the well-blended spread an extra grainy taste. Change it up with shakshuka, a deliciously seasoned baked stew concealing two eggs beneath chunky vegetable tomato broth.
- Spend $8 and get the complete hummus meal--with a side salad, drink, pita bread and pickles.
- What to Drink : Fresh mint flavors the homemade lemonade and subtle mint iced tea for a refreshing sip.

- From the Guide: Situated on Bleecker Street's tourist strip, this narrow takeout spot offers a variety of dishes based on Indian bread: "naanwiches"--sandwiches and wraps made with naan, paratha rolls stuffed with potatoes and naan panini, or "naanini." These can be dressed up with a choice of sauces and chutneys. Salads and fruity beverages are offered as well. The room, decorated with pastel walls, attracts a steady stream of NYU students and neighborhood visitors.

- Burgers, Hotdogs, Salads, Smoothies between $6-11
- Fromg Guide: At New York Burger Co. we prepare all our food with great care, meaning: we charcoal-grill our burgers to order, freshly cut our fries, compose our salads on the spot, and create our signature sauces on premeses. We know that hi-quality foods demand hi-quality ingredients, so we use Coleman Natural Beef for our burgers and chilis, Bell & Evans free-range chicken in our sandwiches, and cholesterol free soybean oil for our French fries and award-winning onion rings.

- Long Tan
- Sun-Thurs: 5:30-12am; Fri & Sat: 5:30-2am
- Thai Cuisine; $6-15
- Review: Head over to Long Tan for a deal unlike any other. You can get a great steak meal for only $10. You can't really beat that, even if the steak was bad. However, their steak is actually quite magnificent. In addition, if you're looking for a something a little extra, you won't have to over expend your wallet. You can get $5 Pâté and 2 for 1 beer
- Roomali
- Mon-Sat: Noon-11pm, Sun: 1pm-10pm
- Indian Cuisine; $9-11
- Review: Another great example of New York’s growing number of not-so-fast fast-food joints, this tiny shop specializes in roti rolls—essentially Indian wraps like the ones served at downtown’s Kati Roll Company, but even better. Chicken tikka, chickpea fritters, and lamb kebab versions are among the offerings, but the yellow cubes of paneer cheese cooked on skewers, then folded into superb made-to-order griddle-fried flatbread along with peppers, cilantro, a dash of chat masala, and an optional layer of egg cooked into the dough, are our favorites. Have one in the spare 25-seat room. — Rob Patronite and Robin Raisfeld
- Wogies Bar & Grill
- Sun-Thurs: 11:30am-2am, Fri & Sat: 11:30am-3am
- Soup and Sandwich, $7-14
- ‘ino Café/Winebar
- 9am-2am seven days a week, $6-10
- Sandwich shop
- Review: Everything you've heard about Greenwich Village, minus the high prices. Crispy, warm sandwiches with meats and cheeses we can't even pronounce run $6-8. Bruschetta, piled high with inventive toppings set you back only $2 apiece. Heck, even the beer is relatively cheap, at only about $4 for a bottle.
- Cosmic Cantina
- 11am-11pm,
- Mexican food, $3-10, cash only
- Review: sually when place boasts of having organic vegetables, we run in the opposite direction until we either collapse from exhaustion (which happens quickly, considering our lousy diet), or find a greasy diner and order up a hamburger. But the Cosmic Cantina, a burrito shop transplanted from North Carolina, manages to serve organic vegetables and still be good. New York still hasn't quite gotten the real, authentic California burrito thing down, but this place does a pretty good imitation, and the prices are good. Burritos run between $5-$10, tacos and quesadillas can be less than five, and an icy-cold beer sets you back only three bucks.
- [ B & H Vegetarian Restaurant]
- Hours not listed
- Vegetarian, $4-10
- Review: If you're looking for a good hearty meal, but tired of the same old diner food, try out this holdover from when the East Village was home to more Eastern European immigrants than recently-graduated-from-college suburban immigrants. Most of the food is vegetarian, all is kosher, and a lot of it is purely delicious. Sandwiches from $4-6, great soups for about three bucks, omelettes for around $4, and so much more. There's not a single item on the menu for more than $10, and you can stuff yourself silly for about eight. This place is great for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
- [ Burger Joint]
- Sun-Thur: 11a,-11:30pm, Fri & Sat: 11am-midnight
- Burger Shop, $6.50-7
- Review: The forced "funky" atmosphere in this little faux hole-in-the-wall tucked away inside one of the fanciest hotels in the city would normally drive us batty, but we're always too busy stuffing our greasy gobs with delicious hamburgers to take much notice of the surroundings. You wouldn't expect to pay less than $5 for an excellent hamburger anywhere in New York, let alone in a hotel that charges more than $300 for a room, but that's exactly what you can do if you go to Burger Joint at Le Parker Meridien.

- You'll get mild-mannered Tex-Mex at Lobo, and this Cobble Hill sit-down tacqueria could definitely use a bit of hot sauce. So skip the meal and head straight for the margaritas. They're made from fresh-squeezed juices, and are just the remedy for those muy caliente summer nights.
